Meet Cheryl, Yogi with a Gypsy Soul

Welcome to UglyHorse Yoga!
You might be wondering about the name—let me share that story and a little about myself.

My name is Cheryl Kish, and I've been teaching yoga since completing my 200-hour RYT certification. About 11 years ago, when my children were still very young, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia (a big word, I know— essentially chronic pain and overstimulation of nerve fibers).
My doctor encouraged me to try yoga for relief, but we spent years experimenting with pharmaceuticals first. Eventually, under her guidance and with the support of others, I transitioned to a plant-based medicine approach- and finally decided to give yoga a try. It didn't take long for me to experience not just relief, but a profound awakening in my body.

Even through the pain, movement became accessible. I was able to work again, return to school, and eventually earned a degree in Psychology from the University of Saskatchewan. In my final year of study, I was diagnosed with Autism and ADHD, along with a slower-than-average cognitive processing speed.

Growing up, my dad didn't believe in learning disabilities, and he denied that I could be disabled in any capacity. While that was challenging, it instilled in me a lifelong love of learning and a deep sense of independence. My grandfather, noticing my rebellious spirit (and my tattoos), used to call me csúnya ló-Ugly Horse. That nickname stuck, and it now represents the resilience and individuality I bring to my practice.

You can find me teaching in various Saskatoon studios, from hot and spicy yang-yin flows in heated rooms to deeply restorative yin classes. I also offer private lessons in my home studio and private group bookings. My classes are inclusive, welcoming all bodies and minds. I won't beg you to come to class, and I won't hold your hand —but I will create a space where you feel supported in your own growth, whatever that looks like for you.

I love this practice because it challenges me— physically and mentally. It helps me find strength and endurance when I need it most. Yoga teaches me to tune out the noise and focus on what truly matters in each moment-breath, movement, and the sensations within my body. It holds me through anger, fear, and excitement. It invites me to reconnect with the parts of myself that I've ignored or forgotten to tend to.

Will you step onto the mat and open your body to awaken your mind?

If yoga sounds like something you'd like to explore, I invite you to meet me in the studio.

Whether you're experienced or brand new, you are welcome here. Let's write movement back into your life-one breath at a time.
